7 ideas for creating a cosy reading corner at home

Article published on 24/11/2022

Combine a comfortable armchair, a beautiful bookcase and carefully chosen decorative accessories to create a reading corner where you can spend hours

Whether you're a true enthusiast or an occasional reader, relaxing with a book in a quiet bubble is always enjoyable. Small or large spaces can be stylishly arranged to create a trendy reading corner in the home. The main thing is to choose a place where you feel comfortable. Here are 7 ideas to help you create a cosy reading corner at home.

Cosy reading area

1. Use the living room to set up a comfortable reading area

The living room is the ideal place to create a cosy reading corner in the house. Near a fireplace, for example, install a chaise longue, a sofa, a footstool or a pretty armchair with plaids and cushions in keeping with the rest of the interior decoration to create a cocooning space. You can also place your reading corner near a window. This is an ideal location to take advantage of the natural light, especially if it faces south. Here again, an armchair and a side table to drink a cup of hot chocolate, tea, coffee or simply to put down your book will be more than enough. Don't hesitate to install a rug to keep your feet warm for even more comfort. If you have a bookcase in your living room, don't hesitate to create a small corner near it to read your novels, magazines, etc. Some bookcases also have niches between two shelves that you can use with large cushions or custom-made mattresses on which you can sit or even lie down.

2. Create a reading corner in the bedroom

Whether for a child or an adult, a reading corner in the bedroom is ideal for decompressing or finding calm. If the room is large, a bench installed near a bookcase will be ideal. For a child's bedroom, remember to install furniture at the child's height. In a large room, you can also add a partition to separate the reading area from the bedroom while connecting the openings. If the space is smaller, there is nothing to stop you using your books as a headboard. Arranged on straight shelves or in various geometric shapes, your books will emphasise the rest of your interior design with elegance. Add to this a pretty, bright lamp with an orange tone on your bedside table and you're done!

3. A reading nook under the stairs

The space under the stairs is often unused. However, it presents a wonderful opportunity to create a small and cosy reading corner. While it can of course appeal to adults, children and teenagers love to take refuge there! To allow them to read their novels, comics, mangas or to learn their lessons, you can install a few small shelves, but also a floor mattress, large cushions for the back and an adapted light. This way, you can be sure to turn this unused space into a welcoming nest for adults and a secret hiding place for the youngest, who are sure to love it.

4. The mezzanine for a reading corner

Although the mezzanine is often left as a passageway, it can nevertheless accommodate a large and beautiful collection of books. You can put them on shelves, on a large bookcase or store them in one or more low cabinets depending on the space. In a larger space, if you have enough room, an hanging chair suspended from the ceiling near a bookcase will be ideal for escaping into another world while reading.

5. A reading corner taking over a whole room

If your house or flat allows it, rather than creating a reading corner, why not go the extra mile and set up a whole room dedicated to your passion? Install a large bookcase along the wall to store all your books as you wish. And if your home allows it, why not make an opening in the ceiling to create a natural light well that you can enjoy for long hours? Add a comfortable sofa with cushions that match the room's decor, a coffee table, some photo frames or paintings and you'll never want to leave your reading corner!

6. A reading corner in a veranda

Surrounded by windows a view of the outside, the veranda is an ideal room in the house for a pleasant reading corner, especially if the view outside is breathtaking. To enjoy a calm moment combined with the pleasure of reading, install a bench, a chaise longue or a large armchair. Add a blanket or plaid and cushions to match the decor and immerse yourself in your reading while keeping an eye on the outside.

7. The balcony, ideal for a cosy reading corner

In winter (depending on the region in which you are located) as well as in summer, the balcony can be perfect for a cosy reading corner. While it offers the opportunity to escape from the house for a few minutes or hours, it also allows you to enjoy the view outside, the sounds of the birds, etc. A bench, with or without a form, is perfect for sitting or lying down while you read. A nearby side table for your drinks, book or smartphone is also very practical.

In conclusion, wherever you choose to set up your reading corner, it is essential that it is a space in which you feel comfortable and that the lighting is appropriate. While cushions, plaids or blankets will allow you to snuggle up comfortably, don't hesitate to add rugs to delimit your reading corner and create a relaxed atmosphere. You can also add one or more green plants, a picture, candles or essential oils to create an even more relaxing atmosphere.
